About Magnetic Shielding

How to Select Magnetic Shielding

Magnetic shielding is designed to protect electrical devices from interference caused by magnetic fields. Thsi magnetic interference propagates through conduction over signal and power lines and degrades the performance of electrical equipment. In extreme cases, it may cause equipment or machinery to malfunction.

Types of Magnetic Shielding Products

The GlobalSpec SpecSearch database includes both raw materials and finished products that can protect against magnetic interference.

  • CRT monitor shields are used to prevent image disturbances or monitor jitter. These five-sided boxes are made of special alloys that protect the cathode ray tube (CRT) from external magnetic fields. There are three CRT shield sizes: 17, 19, and 21 inches.

  • PMT shields are designed to protect photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) that are exposed to magnetic fields. These shields should be sized to allow an air gap between the shield and the base of the photomultiplier tube. Specify a range in a unit of measure such as inches

  • Zero Gauss chambers are constructed of magnetic shielding material and provide a workspace with an extremely low magnetic field.  Almost any enclosed geometry can be used as a zero Gauss chamber.  Cylindrical chambers are one of the most effective geometries for shielding a confined space.

Cable shielding and sleeving with high-permeability magnetic shielding is also available.

Product Specifications

Magnetic shielding is available as foils or sheets, plates, round bars, tubes, and lab or sample kits. When selecting magnetic foil or magnetic sheeting, buyers need to specify the thickness, typically in inches.
